In a World Where the Only Constant is Change, Keep Evolving
As a seasoned medical communications professional with over a decade of experience, I understand the importance of staying agile and adaptive in an ever-evolving field. The industry has undergone significant transformations due to advances in technology and shifts in societal norms, leading to a greater emphasis on digital platforms and a move away from traditional materials. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this trend, with a shift toward virtual interactions, webinars and digital channels for both medical education and communication. This has been a positive change towards more interactive and engaging access to information, whilst highlighting the importance of remaining adaptable and open in all facets of life – including ways of working and communications.
In a world where the only constant is change, it's crucial that we embrace the need to continuously grow and that we seek out opportunities within our client work and career development to do this – even when it's uncomfortable. At Real Chemistry, we reject the notion that "this is the way things have always been done" and, instead, strive to be the difference between what healthcare is and what it should be. We believe in the art of uncovering opportunities to change and improve, and we’re not afraid to embrace those opportunities, even when it means going against the status quo.
Our belief in the need to embrace change is so strong that it’s one of our core values: Evolve, always. This means we should never be satisfied, and we should always be looking for ways to improve and evolve, both as a company and as individuals.
For me, this means constantly challenging myself to be better, to think differently and to push the boundaries of what's possible by always being open to embracing new ideas and ways of working as our field evolves. In the day-to-day this can also mean being flexible and resourceful, for example when addressing last-minute priority briefs from clients during industry events, creatively brainstorming ideas with my team to approach a broadly written new business request, or effectively distilling a complex scientific idea into language appropriate for briefing a creative team.
I lead a team of 21 medical writers and believe every member of this team has the potential to be great. I work hard to provide them with the tools and support they need to grow as writers and realize their full potential, coaching them to also embrace evolving, always – for the better!
Now, everyone has their different strengths and weaknesses, ways of working and interests; however, in my experience as a leader, certain behaviors apply across the board and can help us achieve both individually and as a group. For my team, a mix of an innovative approach, collaboration with empathy and an overarching sense of accountability (another one of Real Chemistry’s values) are key behaviors that have encouraged an environment for continuous growth and development within my team. By believing in the power of new ideas and taking calculated risks, my team is encouraged to think outside the box and challenge the status quo, leading to progress and growth. Equally important is the emphasis on teamwork and collaboration, as no one person has all the answers, and the best solutions often come from working together. Fostering a culture of teamwork, communication and collaboration and seeking out opportunities to partner with others allows the team to drive positive change. Hand in hand with collaboration is empathy – my team and I need to put ourselves in others' shoes to better understand the experiences and perspectives of patients as well as team members and partners, which ultimately guides our actions and decisions. Finally, accountability is crucial as it allows the team to hold themselves accountable for their actions, striving for transparency, honesty and integrity in all that they do, and taking ownership of their mistakes and learning from them. This approach enables the team to learn more quickly, try new things and make more informed decisions in pursuit of our constant betterment.
Ultimately, the only way to be at the forefront of healthcare innovation is to constantly evolve and adapt. By staying focused on our goals and continuously evolving, we can make a real difference in the lives of patients and team members.
